Woodpecker Feeder Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Installation Food (Suet) Maintenance General
Installation Our Woodpecker Feeder comes with a hook for easy hanging, but you can also install a base on the feeder for use with a pole system. Yes! The woodpecker can easily navigate all around the log, even though the log is not a perfect circle and even though it is horizontal or at an angle. You should experiment to determine what works for your situation, but as a rule, begin with a full tube of suet. Starting out, you should make the suet easily visible to all birds so your woodpeckers will see it, but later on you can just fill the feeding port such that the suet is barely visible. Woodpeckers will still find the suet with no problem. Ideally, you want your woodpecker feeder to be away from other feeders and away from launch points that starlings can use to more easily flutter in front of the feeder. We use a hanging system on a hook within a feeder system as well as a feeder on a pole system and a feeder on a wire out by itself. The feeder hanging by itself is the most difficult for starlings to get to. TIP: If you still have a starling problem, buy an inexpensive "angled cone" baffle to install on top of the woodpecker feeder. This will make it impossible for starlings to either lean over the feeder or to land on top of the feeder and jump of into their fluttering position. Many types of squirrel baffle systems will work. We use baffles on all of our feeder systems adn we are far enought away from launch points, so we have no squirrel problems. Our design, which allows for burying the suet 2 1/2 inches deep into feeding ports should make it difficult for squirrels to feed from (unles they start gnawing into the wood itself), should they be able to reach your woodpecker feeder. Food (Suet) Suet is what goes into the feeding ports. Suet is a very good food for most birds all year round, but especially so in winter. Our woodpecker feeder design allows the suet to easily adhere to the feeding ports such that it will not fall out. Suet is a very concentrated form of food energy and is typically made from animal fat. Suet is eaten year-round by birds, but especially so in Winter when food sources are scarce and energy reserves are lower. We recommend a product by Woodpecker Products, Inc., called Attractor™ Nutritional Suet. These folks make top quality suet and are very focused on the woodpeckers feeding needs. In fact, they claim that their product is better than anything a woodpecker can find in the wild. It comes in a 12.25 oz. package containing 3 suet tubes. You can order it from Woodpecker-Feeder.com or you can buy it at many bird feed stores, such as Wild Birds Unlimited. Simply pinch off a bit (marble size) of the suet and roll it out on a flat surface or even between your fingers to form a tube. It's like rolling out dough. Then, just slide the suet into the feeding port and compress it with your pinkie or index finger. Maintenance You can use a 1 inch putty knife or a long blade, flat blade screwdriver. General We spent years learning, experimenting, and researching woodpecker feeders and suet. Our complete woodpecker feeder story and evolution through all these feeders and suet products is detailed in a section on this web site.
